Dog Training. A Guide to a Well-Behaved Companion

Here are some of the most common commands to teach your dog:

  1. Sit: This is a basic command that every dog should know. To teach your dog to sit, hold a treat in front of their nose and move it slowly up and above their head. As they follow the treat with their eyes and nose, their hind end should naturally lower into a sitting position. When they sit, give them the treat and praise.
  2. Stay: This command is useful for keeping your dog in one place. Start by having your dog sit and stay, then take a step away from them. If they follow you, gently guide them back to the sit position and repeat the stay command. Gradually increase the distance between you and your dog until they are able to stay in one place for several minutes without moving.
  3. Come: This command is useful for recalling your dog when they are off-leash. Start by calling your dog’s name, then the word “come”. Reward them with a treat when they reach you. Over time, you can gradually decrease the amount of treats you give, while still praising your dog for coming when called.
  4. Leave it: This command is used to stop your dog from taking or chewing on something they shouldn’t. If your dog tries to take something, say “leave it” and give them a treat for not taking the object. Repeat this process until they understand that when you say “leave it”, they should not take the object.
  5. Heel: This command is used to keep your dog close to you when walking on a leash. Start by walking slowly and using a treat to encourage your dog to stay by your side. As they get better at walking close to you, gradually increase your pace and decrease the use of treats.
Training your dog can be a fun and rewarding experience for both you and your furry friend. It is important to remember that dogs learn at different rates and some may take longer to learn certain commands than others. Patience and persistence are key to success in dog training.
